Home Theater System Question?

home theater system

John asked:

I recently purchased a home theater system

and was wondering if it's better to turn the receiver on and off or just leave it on? The same goes for the subwoofer…is it better to turn those devices off or leave them on if I frequently use them throughout the day? I was just wondering as I really want to prolong the life of my new system. Any other advice for a new home theater system owner?

Thank you.

  1. If you use it frequently specially during weekends, have it in STANDBY MODE to save your settings. It will just cosume minimal power like a wristwatch.Always have it protected with a surge protector. And If you're going away for days, then completely turn it off by unplugging the AC cord or switching off the surge protector estension outlet where you plug that system. The secret of prolonging the life is not to let it overheat like pumping up to high volume. The electonic components will generate heat and those circuit boards will bend causing loose connections on those electrical components resulting in scratchy sound.

  2. leave it on. enjoy it alot. get a new better one when it breaks.

  3. It really makes no difference. To the system much. They arent like light bulbs. Light bulbs are affected by frequent cycling of power.
Most newer systems just go into "Standby" anyway. They actually have some power runing through them at all times.
I turn my system off all the time. Mainly because it is a waste of electricity.
My amp draws 70 watts at idle. That means 70 watts as soon as it is turned on. If I left it on 24/7 then that is equivalent to leaving on a 70 watt light bulb 24/7.
It is not like a pc that takes a long time to boot up. Do not be affraid to turn it off. Turning it off will not hurt it any. You will most likely replace it long before it burns out on you.

Do not let anyone tell you it has to reach
"OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE" or it has to "WARM UP" before it sounds the best. That is a bunch of hogwash and only applies to "TUBE" equipment.
